CHICAGO (WLS) — During her second WNBA season, Courtney Vandersloot recalls wondering whether there would be a third. Her stats improved in 2012, but her confidence didn’t, since she was 23 and coming off a strong rookie year after being picked No. 3 overall in 2011.
“That year, psychologically, I really fought with thinking I was talented enough to be in this league and whether I was going to stay,” Vandersloot said. “I figured it was just bad luck in the first year. ‘You no longer have the excuse of being a rookie, and they’re going to expose you,’ for example.”
It was not to be. Instead, she has established herself as one of the best point guards in the WNBA, leading the league in assists for the last five seasons. And, heading into Sunday’s Game 4 (3 p.m. ET, ESPN/ESPN App) of the 2021 WNBA Finals, Vandersloot has the Chicago Sky one win away from their first WNBA championship.
Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury was asked where Vandersloot stands in terms of her ability to lead a team.
“Isn’t she as excellent as anyone?” Taurasi remarked.

This season, Vandersloot has a WNBA playoff record 87 assists. She passed Sue Bird of the Seattle Storm for the league record of 10 postseason games with at least 10 assists on Friday. This playoffs, Vandersloot, who has the WNBA record for most assists in a game (18), is averaging 13.3 points and 9.7 assists.
In WNBA history, only Bird, Ticha Penicheiro, and Lindsay Whalen have more assists than Vandersloot’s 2,178.
She’s done it as a 5-foot-8 grinder who claims to constantly try to be one step ahead on attack and defense because, “I’m required to be. I’m not going to be able to out-race or out-strength anybody. I’m going to have to consider things through.”
Taurasi admires Vandersloot’s direction of Chicago’s attack, despite her Mercury trailing the Sky 2-1 in the Finals.
Taurasi stated, “She just does a wonderful job of making sure everyone is in the proper area, managing the pace, and getting folks the ball at the right place at the right time.” “There is currently no one in our game who is better at doing that. When you add in her improved shooting, she’s a force to be reckoned with.”
